Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Heightened Security Measures

December 30, 2016

U.S. Embassy Sofia, Bulgaria

According to the Bulgarian Minister of Interior, security measures have been heightened in all cities around the country by increasing police presence around Bulgaria’s critical infrastructure, in winter resorts, and locations where large gatherings are expected.  Tourist and hotel industry organizations, as well as mayors of municipalities that expect a large number of visitors, i.e., Bansko, Razlog, Smolyan, Pamporovo, Sofia and Samokov, will also be informed of heightened security measures.

Bulgaria is currently under a yellow level of awareness, raised from green following the deadly attacks in Berlin on December 19.

The Embassy encourages all U.S. Citizens to be alert and remain vigilant of your surroundings, to report suspicious activity to authorities, and to be mindful of the U.S. Department of State travel warnings for Europe and Turkey.  All U.S. visitors or residents in Bulgaria should take appropriate steps to enhance their personal security.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor media and local information sources and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities.  Specific safety concerns should be addressed to Bulgarian law enforcement authorities who are responsible for the safety of all visitors to Bulgaria.  As a reminder, the local emergency number is 112.
