Call for Applications

The United States Embassy in Sofia in conjunction with Open Society Institute Sofia is happy to announce four internship positions at the Embassy that will be available during the summer of 2016.

The Roma Fellowship Program is open to Roma Bulgarians who are either enrolled at a university or have recently graduated.  Depending on their specific choice of career, academic interests, and skills, the fellows will be placed in one of four sections in the Embassy for a minimum of ten weeks, starting in June.  Please see position descriptions below.

The Roma Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for Roma students and recent graduates to gain insights into the work of the Embassy and the chance to develop the administrative skills and practical experience that add significant value to their future career prospects.  Throughout the duration of the program, fellows will be exposed to intensive language training to build upon their existing level of English.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates for the Roma Fellowship Program are selected on a competitive basis. They should meet the following criteria:

  • Must be 28 years of age or younger
  • Must be either currently enrolled at a university or recent graduates, and able to provide the corresponding documents
  • Must be able to prove high-level academic achievements by providing transcripts to verify academic standing
  • Must be willing to state their Roma origin
  • Must have general communication skills in English and computer literacy (MS Office)
  • Must demonstrate effective communication skills, proactivity, accountability, and solid motivation

Duration

The Embassy offers full-time internships.  A minimum 10-week commitment is required.  Four positions are available.

Compensation

Fellowship positions are paid. 

How to apply

To be considered, applicants should submit the following four documents:

  1. A Curriculum Vitae in English
  2. A Motivation Letter  in English to include objectives and motivations in seeking an internship and how it will contribute to the applicant's professional goals
  3. A University Diploma or proof of official enrollment from a current educational institution and academic transcripts
  4. A Letter of Recommendation in English or a letter in Bulgarian with a translation in English attached

After a review of the documents, applicants will be notified if they have been selected for an interview.  The interviews will be conducted in English.

Position Descriptions

Political/Economic Office

Requirements:  University level studies in Political Science/International Relations/Law/Economics or similar

Level 3 English / Level 4 Bulgarian

Job Description:  Fellow will research and write briefings on political and economic topics in Bulgaria, such as politics and human rights, and will also deliver oral briefings to Embassy officials.  The fellow will have the opportunity to accompany Embassy officials to meetings with non-governmental organizations, political parties, and government officials.   The fellow will help organize events related to human rights and religious freedom issues and provide support for Embassy events, possibly including visitors from Washington.     

Useful skills: Fellow should have strong English writing and speaking skills, excellent organization, judgment, and time-management, and the ability to work without direct supervision. 

General Services Office

Requirements:  University level studies in Administration/Management/Human Resources/Accounting or similar

Level 3 English / Level 4 Bulgarian

Job Description:  Fellow will rotate between all areas of General Services (which include Motor Pool, Procurement, Housing, Property Management, Shipping, and Travel.)

Useful skills: Fellow should have good organization, time-management, and communication skills. 

Management Office/Human Resources OfficeRequirements:  University level studies in Human Resources/ Administration/Management or similar

 Level 3 English / Level 4 Bulgarian

Job Description:  Fellow will split responsibilities between two offices, the Management Office (MGT) and the Human Resources Office (HRO).  The MGT office is responsible for overall leadership and oversight of all management functions.  The fellow will work on the annual internal controls review, special projects, and other recurring tasks. The fellow will also support the HRO day-to-day activities in recruitment and ongoing HR projects and assist with various office organization and administrative tasks as needed. 

Useful skills: Fellow should have good organization, time-management, and communication skills. Knowledge and some experience working with MS Office programs and office equipment.  Good customer service skills.

Office of Defense Cooperation

Requirements:  University level studies in Political Science, International Relations, Military Science, Security Studies or similar.

Level 3 English / Level 4 Bulgarian

Job Description:  Fellow will assist the office with the bilateral defense training and security cooperation programs.  The Fellow will perform various administrative and book keeping tasks including completion of VAT relief forms, managing student documentation and paperwork, and file management for Foreign Military Sales cases.  The Fellow will assist in a review of ODC programs to ensure compliance with the prescribed Inspector General guidelines.  Additionally, he or she will support the ODC day-to-day activities with various office organization and management tasks as needed.
