September 14, 2007
The USS Donald Cook, an Arleigh-Burke destroyer (DDG 75) will visit the port of Varna, Bulgaria, a routine visit that will directly support Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe (CNE) strategic priority of Improving Maritime Security and Safety. This will be the second visit of this ship to Varna in the last three months.
The ship, home-ported in Norfolk, Virginia, has been conducting operations in the Mediterranean and Black Seas in support of maritime and theater security cooperation.
While in Varna, USS Donald Cook and its crew of about 298 sailors and officers will also participate in two community relations projects.
The 154 meter-long ship weighs almost 8,500 tons and can exceed speeds of 30 knots. The ship, which was commissioned in April 1998, can provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities against aircraft, ship, and submarine threats. It can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.
The port call reflects the strong cooperative relationship between the United States and Bulgaria and will help further strengthen our mutually beneficial international security partnership.
Media are invited to cover the community relations event to be held on Monday, September 17, when American and Bulgarian Sailors will spar in a game of soccer at the Varna Municipality field. The match will begin at 10:00 am.
