THE DEFENSE COOPERATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN BULGARIA AND THE UNITED STATESOn April 28, 2006, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Bulgarian Foreign Minister Kalfin signed a Defense Cooperation Agreement, under which U.S. forces will begin joint training at Bulgarian bases starting in 2007. Georgi Parvanov, the President of Bulgaria, called the agreement “a strategic investment in the future of Bulgaria.”

Joint Military Exrecise "Lion Strike"Novo Selo, Bulgaria “Joint Task Force – East is a United States Army European Command initiative that will strengthen relationships between the United States and its European allies,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Bruce Sones, Bulgarian Proof of Principle director. “Our training, which will focus on team and squad-level tactical training, will offer the United States and Bulgaria unprecedented opportunities to build a strong and enduring military relationship,” Sones said. Members of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office in Washington, DC, will be in Bulgaria in June and July 2008 to conduct research and interviews concerning American servicemen unaccounted-for from past conflicts. They will be assisted by the U.S. Embassy's Defense Attaché Office. Anyone with information about American servicemen missing as a result of World War II or military operations during the Cold War (e.g., the Korean War and the Vietnam War) is requested to contact the Defense Attaché Office by sending an e-mail to POW_MIA@state.gov.
