Remarks and Official Statements - 2009
Ambassador McEldowney Remarks
GOB/IBM Nanotechnology Center Agreement Signing Ceremony
May 22, 2009
Thank you very much, Mister Minister,
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,
I am very proud and very pleased to be joining you this morning for what I see as a true milestone, a true step forward for this country and for this partnership between the United States and Bulgaria.
Philosophers and physicist have long told us that the only thing that holds us back are the limits of our imagination. The agreement that we will sign today is going to push the limits of our imagination, and it is going to expand and broaden the horizon for both of us. In a field that is expected to produce three trillion dollars worth of income in just over five years, it is clear that this agreement is going to create jobs and promote development in the country of Bulgaria. But most importantly, what this agreement is going to do is going to position and profile this country to be a leader in innovation and to be an engine in economic growth throughout the region and those are tremendously important and valuable things.
The Government of Bulgaria has chosen IBM as its partner, and it is truly the best partner in the world for this kind of project. It is a world class company, it is a world leader in innovation in nanotechnology, and it is a world record holder for patents in this field. I truly can think of no better symbol for what we are doing between the United States and Bulgaria, and I can think of no better step toward the future of Bulgaria than this agreement.
So I am very proud, very pleased, to congratulate all of you and us together on this mutual agreement and this mutual step forward. Thank you very much. Thank you to IBM for coming here to make this possible.
Thank you.
