Embassies Celebrate Gay and Lesbian Pride Month with Sofia International Film Series

May 26, 2011

For Immediate Release

The U.S. Embassy joins the British, German, French, and Swiss Embassies in announcing the start of the Sofia Pride International Film Series in honor of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, which is celebrated each year in June. The series features one movie selected by each of the five sponsoring embassies, and aims to promote acceptance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights in Bulgaria by examining the different issues and challenges which members of the LGBT community face in today’s world.  All films will include Bulgarian subtitles.

The U.S. Embassy will kick off the film series with a screening of the Academy-Award-winning film Milk on June 1 at 19:00 at the American Corner in Sofia City Library, 4A Slaveikov Square. Milk tells the story of the American gay activist Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected official. The screening will be followed by an after-show party at My Mojito Club Sofia.

On June 8, the German Embassy will present the movie Sascha at 19:00 at their Embassy building, located at 25 Joliot-Curie Street. The film follows a gay teenager of Montenegrin-German origin who struggles to come to grips with his identity while searching for acceptance within German society.  Note: due to security concerns, bags will not be permitted inside the Embassy building.

The French Embassy will show the film Comme les autres (Baby Love), which portrays a gay man’s quest to become a father. The screening will take place on June 15 at 19:00 at the French Institute, 2 Diakon Ignatij Street.

The Swiss documentary Katzenball (Feline Masquerade) depicts the lives of five Swiss lesbians from different generations, who explore what it meant to be a gay woman during a time when the word “lesbian” was still unknown. Katzenball will be shown on June 22 at 19:00 at the American Corner in Sofia City Library, 4A Slaveikov Square. The screening will be followed by an after-show party at My Mojito Club Sofia.

The British Embassy will close the film series with a screening of Beautiful Thing on June 29 at 19:00 at the British Council, 7 Krakra Street. Originally a play written by British playwright Jonathan Harvey, Beautiful Thing tells the story of a working-class teen infatuated with his male classmate.  Places are limited and will be distributed on a first-come/first-served basis. To book your place, please write to booking@britishcouncil.bg
