For Interview Cases

If you want your application form to be reviewed you have to come to an interview.

The visa application process is really quite easy. A complete application package consists of the following:

Step 1: Take your picture:  You will need a recent photo taken within the past six months, 5 x 5 cm, against a white or off-white background. Photo specifications are very exact.

Step 2: Complete the DS-160 online application.
- Complete the visa application form DS-160. It is available in English only at This is an online application form required from all applicants. It simply needs to be filled online only, print the last barcoded confirmation page.  The application form doesn’t need to be printed.  You should present the confirmation page only on the day of the interview.

NOTE: Applicants have to answer all questions on the DS-160. They have to pay special attention to the contact information. Business telephone numbers are obligatory, if the applicant is employed.  Even if the applicant does not have a direct telephone number at his/her work place, they have to provide a general telephone number for their employer/switchboard number, etc./

Step 3: Go to the U.S. Traveldocs Portal at:  If you are visiting this site for the first time, please follow the links and create a profile. If you have registered previously, use your Username and Password to log in.  It is also possible to start the application process via our Call Center by calling:

All users will receive a username and password via e-mail after their account is created.

Step 4: Pay the visa application fee.
Currently there are two payment options:

TrustPay (Electronic Transfer)
You may pay your MRV Fee using your online bank account using the TrustPay service (Direct Bank Transfer). This payment process can be administered online.

You can check whether your bank participates in TrustPay.

After logging into your profile and while on the payment screen, you can select the TrustPay payment option and enter your internet banking details.

Cash at Bank
Visa Applicants can pay their application fee in cash at any Fibank branch. The fee is payable in Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Before going to a Fibank location, you must print the applicable U.S. visa application deposit slip available on this page: The application fee for the most common nonimmigrant visa types is $160. This includes tourist, business, student, and exchange visas. Most petition-based visas, such as work and religious visas, are US$190. The fee amount for E visas is US$205.

Select the deposit slip that matches your visa application fee. Values are shown in U.S. dollars, but payment is in BGL. This page has more information about the different visa application fees. If you print a deposit slip in advance of the day in which you plan to make your payment, please take note of the expiration date on the deposit slip. After printing the slip, please ensure you fill in your name, EGN, and the “amount in words” as per the amount displayed on the printed deposit slip. Take the printed deposit slip with you to pay your fee. You will be unable to pay your fee if you are not in possession of a valid deposit slip.

Upon receipt of your payment, Fibank will issue you a receipt. You must save your receipt. It cannot be replaced if it is lost. Fibank will be unable to issue a duplicate receipt. You will not be able to schedule an appointment without your receipt number.

Step 5: Schedule your appointment.

If you are paying your MRV Fee using the online payment option TrustPay, you can proceed with the interview appointment scheduling immediately after you have completed the payment. You can do this through your profile at

If you have chosen to pay your fee at Fibank, you can schedule your appointment online through your profile at: or contact our call center.  You will need the nine-digit number printed on your bank receipt. Please, have in mind that in this case you will be able to schedule your appointment usually on the following business day.

Please note:  When scheduling your appointment, you will have to choose how you want your passport and visa delivered, in case the visa is approved.  You will see two options:

•    Premium Delivery Option

If you choose the Premium Delivery option, you will have to provide a valid home or office address in Bulgaria, where TNT Courier service will deliver your passport. There is an additional fee of 10 BGN per passport for the whole territory of Bulgaria, which is paid directly to TNT on delivery. Please provide your mobile phone number and email address, so TNT can contact you to schedule a date and time for delivery.  Someone must be present at your home or office when the courier comes to deliver your passport. Passports will be delivered only on business days. Please note that TNT will make a limited number of attempts to deliver the passport(s) to your home or office address.  If you are not present to receive your passport, it will be returned to the Embassy.

•    TNT Pick-up Option

You may choose to pick-up your passport at a TNT office that is convenient for you. You have to select this TNT office address when you schedule your interview.  This option is free of charge. Please provide your current email address.  You will receive an email when your passport arrives at the pick-up location.

Please note that TNT will only hold passports for nine working days from the date when you receive an email confirmation that your passport has arrived at the pick-up location.  Failure to pick-up your passport within this time may cause delays in the receipt of your passport.  After nine working days, your passport will be returned to the Embassy and you will then need to wait for instructions on how to collect your passport.
One applicant can schedule one appointment. If a family is applying for visas, please schedule appointments for each family member for the same date and time. Families should always appear at the interview together!

Applicants are allowed to reschedule their appointment 3 times per valid MRV fee receipt. In case they miss their initial appointment, applicants are automatically allowed to reschedule their appointment.  Applicants are allowed to request emergency appointments after first scheduling a regular appointment.

Step 6: Gather the following required documentation: DS-160 confirmation page, appointment confirmation sheet, 1 photograph, Fibank receipt, a valid passport, and all previous U.S. visas, even if expired, copy of birth certificate(s) of applicant(s) and of their children, if any.  Learn more about the other recommended documents.

Step 7: Arrive outside at the entrance of the Embassy at your specified appointment time. The primary applicant will be the only person allowed into the building for the interview except in the case of minor children (ages 17 and under).

Visa Processing:

Average Visa Processing Time - 2-4 business days, unless there are technical delays.

Please note that a small percentage of visa applications require additional special clearances or administrative processing.  When additional special clearances or administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.
Step 8: Collecting Your Documents

Applicants approved for visa issuance will have their passports and visas delivered by one of two methods:

  • Premium Delivery:  If you have selected this option, you will receive a call from TNT Courier service and will arrange the date and time for the passport delivery. Remember that there is an additional fee of 10 BGN per passport, which is paid directly to TNT on delivery. Passports will be delivered only on business days.
  • TNT Pick-up:  After receiving an e-mail notification, you may pick-up your passport at the TNT pick-up location that you have chosen when you scheduled your interview.  This option is free of charge.

If you have already scheduled an appointment online, but wish to modify the TNT documents delivery address (or change way of delivery – from pick-up option to home delivery or vice versa), you can do so online or through the call center until 11:59 p.m. on the day before your interview at the Embassy. 

There is an option for same day pick-up of documents, if applicants select the following designated pick-up location in Sofia:

Typical delivery time for Sofia is 1 day, for locations outside of Sofia 2-4 days.

To collect your passport, regardless whether at your home address or at the TNT pick-up location, you must present your original (not a photocopy) government-issued photo ID.

You will also need to have your User ID (UID) number, available on your appointment letter.  

If you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must be present for passport pick-up and must show his/her government-issued identification document.  They will also need to have a photocopy of your passport. If this is not available, they may present your birth certificate or government issued identification document.

If a representative is collecting your passport on your behalf - even in case of family members - the representative must present:

  • Their own original government-issued photo ID for identification
  • A photocopy of your government-issued photo ID
  • A letter of authority, signed by you, authorizing your representative to collect your passport. The letter of authority must contain the following information:
  1. Your representative's full name as shown on their government-issued photo ID
  2. Your name and date of birth

If the applicant is under the age of 16, the following documents are required:

  • An original letter, signed by one of the applicant’s parents, authorizing the presentative to collect the passport.  A clear photocopy of the government-issued photo ID belonging to the parent who signed the applicant's letter of authority
  • The representative's original government-issued photo ID

In case of a group/family, a single letter of authority with the required information for each of the applicants will be accepted.

Passport Tracking Options
For your convenience, you have several options to choose from to track the location of your passport.

Email: Send an email to and in the subject and/or body enter a valid passport number exactly as it was entered at the time the appointment was scheduled. Do not include any additional text. You will receive an automatic response with the status.

Online: You can track your passport online.

Chat, and Telephone: You can track your passport with the assistance of our call center via chat or telephone. The call center's contact information and a full description of our call center services, including hours of operation, can be found here.

Apply for your Visa early and before you make final travel arrangements. The consular section advises that applicants never purchase nonrefundable tickets until a visa has been issued.
