July 24, 2009
On Friday July 24 on the popular “Panorama” TV show, Ambassador McEldowney commented on a wide range of bilateral topics and also shared some of her personal observations with the show’s host Boyko Vassilev. In her last formal interview for the Bulgarian media, Ambassador McEldowney reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Bulgaria, both by the embassy and by the White House. She underscored that this region is very important to the U.S., and that Bulgaria will play an increasingly important role in our partnership as we focus less on internal problem solving but more on problems elsewhere. She pointed out that the people of Bulgaria made a choice in the latest election, and that the new government must take positive actions to move Bulgaria forward. She also highlighted key items on the U.S. agenda including the close military partnership, the numerous U.S. businesses in Bulgaria working on energy and information technology, and schools such as American University of of Blagoevgrad and American College of Sofia, all examples of the close relationship between the U.S. and Bulgaria. She noted that organized crime and corruption are examples of issues that need to be raised, largely because they remain unresolved. Still, there are many areas where our strategic partnership is moving forward, she said. Ambassador McEldowney referenced a Bulgarian proverb, “The morning foretells the day”, to illustrate that the future looks good for Bulgaria, and for an ambitious agenda for our bilateral partnership.
