PRESS RELEASE
May 28, 2008
Press Conference to be held at BTA, 13:00, 29 May, 2008
The USAID-funded East Central European Scholarship Program (ECESP), implemented by the Georgetown University Intercultural Studies Department, will summarize the program’s achievements in Bulgaria on May 29 at a press conference at BTA, and then celebrate the alumni successes at an evening ceremony at Arena di Serdika Hotel. Many Bulgarian leaders have benefited from the program, including EU commissioner Ms. Meglena Kuneva. Several alumni who hold high positions at various institutions will share their ECESP experience during the press conference.
The ECESP started in 1990 to assist emerging democracies of Eastern Europe with transforming their post-communist societies and economies. Since 1998, ECESP has been active in Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Romania.
For the past 9 years, the program has trained more than 160 Bulgarian experts in long-term academic scholarship non-degree programs and more than 250 Bulgarians in short-term regional or in-country training programs.
The program focuses on training leaders, experts, administrators and managers in: leading and managing change; strengthening democratic governance; developing economic growth; improving health and social services; finance and banking; auditing; public administration; regional and local development; risk management; health financing; international health; labor; and NGO management. The program uses a broad array of academic scholarships and shorter training programs, specifically designed to enhance professional development and build institutional capacity.
