American Corner Host First Concert During AmBul Music Festival in Sofia

The American Corner in Sofia played host to its first concert on Saturday, October 3rd with the opening act of the 2009 AmBul Festival of American and Bulgarian music.  “Secret Weapons,” the Clarinet Quintet of the USAFE Band, played a free concert for a full house of more than 80 Bulgarians.

The festival ran from October 3rd to 9th and brought composers and performers from the U.S. and Europe to Sofia for a series of special concerts featuring a wide range of musical styles. Since 1998 the festival has been a favorite event in Sofia.  This year the festival expanded to include works by composers from other Balkan countries.

The American Clarinet Quintet is one of several chamber music ensembles that are part of the USAFE Band, and they travel throughout Europe to perform for civilian and military audiences.  Established in 2005, the ensemble embraces traditional quartet music as well as light popular and jazz styles.  During this festival they played works by American composers Aaron Copland, George Gershwin and Scott Joplin.
The U.S. Embassy in Sofia was proud to be one of the sponsors of the AmBul Music Festival.
