Embassy Helps Young Astronomers Celebrate U.S. Space Program

June 27, 2009

Ambassador McEldowney signed certificates for the winners of the Man on the Moon educational art project organized with the National Astronomical Observatory in Varna to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 flight.  The cooperation of the Embassy with the Varna Observatory includes a number of initiatives that reach out to young people and inspire them for careers in science and technology.  The New Era of Discovery paper show on NASA projects is on display by the Star Room of the Observatory and has over 200 visitors per day.  On June 27, it attracted the interest of over 100 young Bulgarians participating in the XXV National Conference of Astronomy.  In addition, a NASA video on 50 Years of Exploration was shown within the program of the conference.  To give young astronomers a personal connection to space, the Embassy has arranged for them to participate in the NASA/Lockheed Martin Signatures in Space program and have their signatures flown aboard the next space shuttle mission.

All events were covered by the local press.
