Bulgarian High School Students Win a U.S. Department of State Competition

Four Bulgarian high school students from the Joan Ekzarch Language School in Vratsa won the Doors to Diplomacy competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
Doors to Diplomacy was a collaborative project whose goal was to encourage middle and high school students around the world to produce web projects that teach others about the importance of international affairs and diplomacy.
For the 2008 contest, 179 teams from all over the world registered, of which 93 completed their projects within the deadline and took part in the actual competition. Student team members had to be between the ages of twelve and nineteen years. Teams had to have between two and four student members, and one or two adult coaches. Web projects had to be submitted in English in only one out of the following eight categories: Leadership Traits; Safety and Security; Peace and Democracy: Social Issues; History of Foreign Relations; Business, Trade, and Economics; Health and Environmental Awareness; Science and Technology; Arts and Culture.
A Bulgarian team comprised of Iva Nikolaeva, 16, Tsvetelinka Kamenova, 17, Nikol Tsvetanova, 16, Nikola Nikolov,16, and their teacher Dimitrinka Georgieva from Joan Ekzarch Language School in Vrasta won the 2008 Doors to Diplomacy Competition in the Health and Environment Awareness category. The winning team gets a $2,000 worth of scholarship award per student. The coach gets $500 to spend at her school, as well.
