U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Alexander Karagiannis presented a donation of more than U.S. $500,000 in medical supplies and equipment to Chirpan Hospital on Monday, March 26. Тhe non-profit organization Project C.U.R.E. donated the supplies, which were shipped to Bulgaria through the support of private donations totaling U.S. $15,000. Seattle resident and Peace Corps volunteer Trevor Lake, currently working in Chirpan, helped lead the effort to raise the necessary funds to ship the 40-foot container of supplies from the United States. Peace Corps counterparts Petia Ivanova and Svetla Doneva; hospital Director Totev and his staff; and Chirpan Mayor Donev and vice-mayors Antoaneta Paunova and Ivaylo Kracholov were instrumental in securing the orderly arrival of the donated material.
The donation will provide an improved hospital experience for the sick and aging in Chirpan. New lab supplies and an ultrasound machine will help in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Other materials include new beds, an anesthesia machine, and an autoclave, all of which will provide safer and more comfortable conditions for medical treatment.
