Deputy Chief of Mission

Alexander Karagiannis is a career Foreign Service Officer in the United States Department of State.  Born on November 4, 1952 in Greece, he immigrated to the United States in 1958.  He matriculated from Washington University in St. Louis (1974, BA magna cum laude) and from Indiana University (1977 MA; 1981 Ph. D.), specializing in East European, Russian and Soviet history.

Mr. Karagiannis joined the State Department in 1981, serving overseas in Dusseldorf, Bonn, Thessaloniki, Ankara, Athens, and London.  In the Department, he has served as Desk Officer for Greece; Officer in Charge for Italy, Vatican and Malta Affairs; Officer in Charge for UN Security Council issues and UNGA reform;  Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council; and most recently as Office Director for UK, Belgium,  The Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Ireland Affairs.  He is married to Katherine Ingmanson, also a career Foreign Service Officer; they have two children, Christopher (8) and Marianna (7).
