Ð?ES and Hewlett Packard Launch Major Investments in Bulgaria
PRESS RELEASE
June 6, 2006
U.S. Ambassador John Beyrle today announced the launch of two major American investments in Bulgaria and attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Maritza Iztok I Power Plant, to be built by the U.S. company AES In Galabovo. At EUR 1 billion, this is the largest foreign investment in Bulgaria’s history. It will provide jobs and opportunity for many Bulgarians and will meet the strictest air quality standards of the European Union. The new power plant will also help Bulgaria retain its advantage as an exporter of electricity.
Also today, the American Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Jeffrey Levine marked the opening of the new Hewlett Packard global support center in Sofia. The HP support center will employ over one thousand young Bulgarians with computer and information specialties. HP chose to open this global support center in Bulgaria over many other competing European countries, a strong vote of confidence in the level of talent and business opportunities in this country.
“This is the springtime for American investment in Bulgaria as investments by American companies begin to bear fruit,” Ambassador Beyrle said. “These investments will bring jobs, opportunity and economic growth to Bulgaria.”
